The Truth About Whole-Home Battery Backup Systems
As Energy Consultants we often get asked if batteries will back up the home during a power shutoff. Including AC’s, electric vehicles or pool pumps. The short answer is it really depends on your backup system.
Solar coupled with battery backup systems are being held out as the best solution to PG&E’s antiquated electric grid and Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) in California. These systems power the home during power shutoffs, reduces electric costs, are gentle on the environment and provide a better exchange for your Net Energy Metering (NEM).
So, it comes as no surprise that the demand for these systems is at an all-time high.
Back Up Systems and Whole-Home Backup Systems
When determining what would be appropriate for a whole-home battery backup system you have to think in terms of what is needed when the sun is down and your solar is no longer charging the batteries. In essence, how much stored energy do you need to power the things in your home that you will use, from the time the sun goes down, until it comes back up and begins to recharge your battery system the next day. This is the time that your home is truly dependent solely on the energy stored in the batteries.
Most folks when getting batteries for their home use them not as a whole-home energy solution for power outages but rather as a system to support critical loads. Meaning fridge and freezer, lighting, entertainment, communications and convenience outlets. It excludes thing like AC, Electric dryer, Electric stove, pool pump, electric vehicle, and other large load appliances. The reason is because whole-home battery backup can be quite costly. Whereas backup for critical systems coupled with solar panels is often less expensive than what folks are currently paying for their electricity provided by their local utility.
A Tesla Powerwall, Generac Power Cell, LG Chem, or Enphase Encharge 10 Battery would all be sufficient to support critical loads and are cost effective backup systems.
However, what if you would like a whole-home backup system. Depending on the size of your home and what you are powering this would incorporate 2 batteries or more.
For the most cost effective whole-home system the Generac generator is our solution of choice.
For a green critical system solution, we often suggest a Tesla power wall.
